The Chiefs are heavily favored, and for good reason, against the underdog Chargers on Sunday afternoon. Los Angeles lost their opening game to the (supposedly) lowly Jacksonville Jaguars, with Tyrod Taylor and the Chargers offense looking very beatable. The Chiefs, meanwhile, easily took out the Houston Texans in the NFL season opener, and hung their first Super Bowl banner in a half-century in the process.

For the Chargers to pull off any kind of upset, they’ll have to win ugly. That means keeping the ball away from Mahomes and the Chiefs offense as much as possible. A heavy dose of Austin Ekeler should be expected, but it’s unclear if that’ll be enough, as the Chiefs have an emerging running back of their own in Clyde Edwards-Helaire to match.

That’s the issue with beating this year’s Chiefs. They can counter any game plan, and the Chargers won’t have an answer if Kansas City can keep THEIR offense off the field, and thus keep their defense fresh. Kansas City’s defense has seemingly improved year-over-year, though a beleaguered secondary could come back to haunt them against pass-happy teams. The Chargers, with Taylor as more of a game manager, are not that.
