Who is Jimmy Garoppolo’s backup with 49ers?
With Jimmy Garoppolo out for the rest of the game against the Jets, it’s now the Nick Mullens show.
Unfortunate news arrived for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday early on in their showdown against the New York Jets, with star signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo suffering an ankle injury. He powered through the pain, but was not back out with the team to start the second half.
It has since been announced that Garoppolo will be out for the rest of the game and is getting X-rays on his injured ankle. So, who will be the player to run the offense for Kyle Shanahan and San Francisco? That’d be No. 2 quarterback Nick Mullens.
Nick Mullens is in his third season with the San Francisco 49ers and has started eight games
Mullens arrived to San Francisco in 2018 and appeared in eight games that year, starting each contest. That campaign, the Southern Mississippi product threw for 2,277 yards and 13 touchdowns, while also throwing 10 interceptions.
Last season, Mullens saw action in one game as Garoppolo’s backup and didn’t have a pass attempt. With Garoppolo now out for the rest of the game against New York, and potentially longer depending on the results of his X-rays, Mullens may be in line to see extensive action.
Unfortunately for the 49ers too, Garoppolo wasn’t the only player to suffer an injury, as Raheem Mostert, Nick Bosa and Soloman Thomas also went down and won’t be able to get back on the field against the Jets. It’s been a nightmare day on the injury front for Shanahan and the 49ers.
