Solomon Thomas is the latest 49er to suffer a knee injury.

If you’re a member of the San Francisco 49ers, it’s definitely time to invest in a knee brace. For Solomon Thomas, it’s too late for that.

Thomas suffered a torn ACL on Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN confirmed on Monday.

He is the second San Francisco defender with an ACL injury from Week 2 action after Nick Bosa’s knee injury was also diagnosed as an ACL tear.

Solomon Thomas and Nick Bosa are out, but that’s not all.

If those were the only injuries Kyle Shanahan and company had to deal with, it would be tough enough. They’re not.

ESPN’s Field Yates summed up the 49ers woes pretty succinctly:

“The 49ers have five WR & Richard Sherman on IR, starting C on PUP, Jimmy G & their top two RB hurt, George Kittle has a sprained knee, Nick Bosa & Solomon Thomas have likely ACL tears, Dee Ford is hurt, the MRI machine broke & their Airplane got hit on the runway.

“Other than that…”

Oh, and San Francisco is surrounded by fires. No big deal.

An optimist could look at the injury list and be discouraged, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. MCL injuries for Raheem Mostert and George Kittle mean they will be able to return this season. Basically, it could have been worse.

San Francisco will need to make it through Week 3 against the Giants with a wounded lineup. At least New York isn’t having an easy time of it either. Star running back Saquon Barkley is also out for the season with an ACL injury.

On an individual level, a season-ending injury so soon in 2020 is devastating. This was a contract year for Thomas, who hasn’t quite lived up to his billing as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He started just three games last year while producing two sacks and 21 tackles.
