Jeopardy contestants have no clue who faces the Alabama Crimson Tide in the annual Iron Bowl, and now we’re sad.

When scrolling through your cable channels on television, you come across the game show, Jeopardy. And you decide to leave it on to try and test your knowledge against the three contestants. There are some challenges, but then, there are gimme sports answers that are guaranteed money for the competitors. But on a recent episode of Jeopardy, the three individuals matching wits against each other, quite frankly, made us lose faith in humanity.

On Thursday evening, host Alex Trebek provided the answer “Alabama plays this SEC arch-rival in the Iron Bowl.” The question was obviously, “What is Auburn?” But those three people on our televisions had no absolutely no clue. In fact, one man thought it was the Arkansas Razorbacks who played the Crimson Tide in the Iron Bowl. No!

A brief history lesson for those contestants

Since those three contestants had no clue about the Iron Bowl, we’ll be happy to give them a lesson in college football history.

The two schools first met on Feb. 22, 1893, which Auburn won by the score of 33-23. However, there was a discrepancy between both schools. Auburn considered this game the first contest of the 1893 season, while Alabama fought that this was the final game of the 1892 season. After both teams tied in 1907, the programs didn’t face each other until 1948 due to contractual disagreements.

In 1950, the Iron Bowl name was created by Auburn head coach Ralph “Shug” Jordan, which references Birmingham’s steel industry. The schools have faced each other 84 times, and the Crimson Tide lead the series 46-37-1. Auburn were victorious in their latest meeting last year, where they eked out a 48-45 victory over Alabama.

So there you go. A little sports history lesson for the Jeopardy competitors. We’ll wait for our check in the mail.
