After the Lakers took a 2-0 advantage in the Western Conference Finals thanks to Anthony Davis’ buzzer-beating three-pointer, the Denver Nuggets’ backs were against the wall. Another lackluster effort as we’d seen in Game 1 couldn’t be afforded, or the Nuggets would face an insurmountable (even to them) 3-0 deficit with a spot in the NBA Finals on the line.

So, what did the Nuggets do? Denver dominated on the boards when they needed that effort most, held Davis to singe-digit rebounds and all but eliminating him from the Lakers game-plan. Sure, LeBron James had a triple-double, but without Davis playing a significant Robin role, the Lakers were much easier to stop on the defensive end for Denver.

Offensively, Nikola Jokic continued his strong play, and the Nuggets survived the Lakers comeback attempt despite some questionable offensive strategy come the fourth quarter. Jamal Murray led the way with the kind of game we’ve become accustomed to seeing with the Nuggets in a tough spot, with 28 points, 12 assists and 8 rebounds. Add in Jerami Grant’s playoff career high of 26 points, and the Nuggets received contributions they desperately needed in a must-win game.

Thursday night can be no different, as a 3-1 deficit against these Lakers is far different than the previous series’ comeback attempts. Denver wouldn’t be as comfortable standing in the way of LeBron James and another Finals’ appearance.
