Potential NFL first-round pick Tyler Shelvin has announced officially that he’s opting out of the 2020 season for LSU.

LSU fans had been holding out some hope that monster news would be coming in on superstar defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin. Leading up to the 2020 campaign, rumors had been swirling that Shelvin would end up making his way back to Baton Rouge to suit up for Ed Orgeron this season.

However, that won’t be happening. On Thursday, Shelvin decided to make things official, taking to Twitter to announce that he’l be opting out of the season in order to train for the 2021 NFL Draft.

The news is no doubt a major bummer for Orgeron and the LSU faithful out there, as Shelvin became a fan favorite last year. With the team going 15-0 and winning the National Championship, the defensive tackle was a huge part of things.

Last campaign, the 6-foot-3, 346-pounder posted 39 tackles as a sophomore. The year before, he finished with nine stops and 1.5 sacks. With his massive frame, he was known for plugging up holes and getting his enormous body on running backs trying to break free for extra yards.

Now, Shelvin will look to get his mind and body ready for the 2021 NFL Combine. The early word surrounding Shelvin is that he’s a potential first-round pick, as men of his size don’t exactly grow on trees. General managers across the board will undoubtedly be interested to see what he can accomplish at the Combine.

For now, LSU fans will have to watch the Tigers with Shelvin not on the field. However, you better believe they’ll be rooting for him during the NFL Draft and once he makes his pro debut.
