DJ LeMahieu of the New York Yankees throws to first to force out Cesar Puello of the Boston Red Sox during the seventh inning at Fenway Park on Sept. 20, 2020 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Longtime rivals, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox series always make for exciting games to photograph. There’s a lot of heart and intensity from both of these teams, and I try and illustrate that whenever I have the chance to cover their games. While I missed the usual roar of the crowd in a packed Fenway Park, the athletes played with the same precision and concentration that they would to a sold-out ballpark. In this photo, DJ LeMahieu of the Yankees flashes a quick throw to first to force out Cesar Puello of the Red Sox during the seventh inning, but it just wasn’t enough for the Bronx Bombers. The Red Sox went on to score three more runs that inning and another in the eighth, making the final score 10-2 — an upset for the Yankees — however just hours later they luckily punched their ticket to the postseason.

Ryan McDonagh of the Tampa Bay Lightning checks Corey Perry of the Dallas Stars during the third period in Game 3 of the 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Final at Rogers Place on Sep. 23, 2020 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

With the 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Final series in a 1-1 deadlock, things got ratcheted up for a pivotal Game 3. Ryan McDonagh of the Tampa Bay Lightning was a target most of the night due to a questionable hit in Game 2, and the Dallas Stars Corey Perry was heavily involved with McDonagh all night with multiple attempts to plant his 6-foot-3 frame in front of the net. That provided me the perfect angle to keep my camera on for this shot. That and some theatrical celebrations in the Lightning’s 5-2 victory.

LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers and Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers react after their win against the Denver Nuggets in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals during the 2020 NBA Playoffs at AdventHealth Arena at the ESPN Wide World Of Sports Complex on Sept. 24, 2020 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

After a loss to the Denver Nuggets in Game 3, the Los Angeles Lakers were looking for a win to take control of the series in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals. With an early lead and fight to keep the Nuggets at bay, the Lakers were up by six points and the game had just basically ended with time running off the clock. I saw LeBron walk up to teammate Anthony Davis where he shot him this look, which said a lot about what he was feeling at that moment. LeBron conveyed so much in this one frame; it is the look that says we’re very much still in this fight and to keep pushing on.
