Cunningham’s head hit the turf hard on Louisville’s final offensive play of the game

Louisville’s offense against Pittsburgh’s defense was the marquee matchup of this ranked ACC affair, with Pitt coming out the winner thanks to a late stop against Cunningham and Co.

On that final play, Cunningham hit his head on the turf hard, throwing an interception in the process. Pitt would go on to kneel out the game, but not before a solid ten-minute delay while the trainers attended to Cunningham, who laid motionless on the Heinz Stadium turf.

Here’s the game-sealing play, in which Cunningham was hurt.

Louisville’s success this season rides on Cunningham’s development

While Cunningham’s injury wasn’t obvious on the play, he had two Pitt defenders draped on him as he made the throw, tripping him into an awkward fall. He then hit his head on the turf, which is the assumed cause of the injury at this point.

It was a scary situation at Heinz Field, and Cunningham was eventually removed from the turf on a stretcher. There is some hope, though, as he was conscious enough to give a thumbs up while being taken to the locker room.

The extent of Cunningham’s injury is unknown at this time. We’ll have an update when it’s made available.
