4. Sam Ehlinger, QB, Texas

Sam Ehlinger and the Texas Longhorns undoubtedly got a scare from Texas Tech on Saturday as Tom Herman’s team was down by 15 points late in the fourth quarter. However, some late-game heroics from the quarterback, in addition to a perfect onside kick, allowed Texas to force overtime, where Ehlinger struck for the final time to ultimately give Texas the win and move to 2-0 on the year.

It wasn’t another huge yardage total for Ehlinger through the air as he put up just 262 yards but he did have five touchdowns and just one pick. He ran much more in this game than in the opener, though, going for 69 yards and another score. Ehlinger has experience, talent and, apparently, a bit more juice as a passer than we’ve seen before. Subsequently, his candidacy for this award is only getting stronger.

3. Kyle Trask, QB, Florida

The Florida Gators defense undoubtedly showed some wrinkles that needed to be ironed out on the road against Ole Miss on Saturday. But luckily for Dan Mullen’s team, the hype surrounding quarterback Kyle Trask appeared well worth it. The young signal-caller was an absolute stud, going 30-of-42 for 416 yards and six touchdowns, giving the Florida offense a look they haven’t seen since the days of Tebow.

It should be noted that, while the Rebs offense under Lane Kiffin forced a shootout, Ole Miss’s defense was expected to be quite bad this year. Great players put up great numbers against advantageous matchups and that’s what Trask did. But for the Gators quarterback to cement him at the top of the Heisman Trophy rankings, he’ll need to continue his stellar play as the competition ramps up.
