Jadon Sancho was Manchester United’s top transfer target this summer, but the club’s recent actions show they’ve given up hope on signing the starlet.

Manchester United officials still view Jadon Sancho as the perfect player to boost the club’s attack, but they now understand they have no chance to sign him this summer. Instead, the English club have switched their attention to buying a cheaper option.

According to TalkSport, United now are eyeing a late move for Watford attacker Ismaila Sarr before the summer transfer window slams shut. The Hornets want a minimum of £40 million for the speedster, but that’s only a third of what Dortmund were requiring to part with Sancho. By comparison’s sake, Sarr is a veritable bargain for the Premier League club.

United fans will understandably be disappointed in their club’s inability to land their top target. Sancho has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford since leaving Manchester City to make his name in the Bundesliga. Dortmund were willing to sell him this summer, but only if their full asking price was met. United believed the German club would ultimately lower their asking price as the transfer deadline drew close, but those hopes have been dashed in recent days.

Sarr isn’t nearly as skilled as Sancho is with the ball at his feet, but his athleticism still makes him an intriguing target for United. He’s well-suited to give Bruno Fernandes a target who can run behind central defenders at a moment’s notice. His arrival at United would create even more space for the club’s star-studded attack.

Predictably, United aren’t the only club keeping tabs on Sarr. Liverpool were strongly linked with a swoop before they made a deal for Diogo Jota. Sarr doesn’t seem to be a top priority for any big clubs in Europe at the moment, but the fact that he’s a backup choice for so many clubs means United must ask fast to obtain his services.

United’s quest to sign Sancho will now have to wait until next summer. The club’s hesitancy also gives the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona a chance to jump into the fray. That reality will place real pressure on Sarr to produce right away if he does make the move to United.
