Freddie Freeman’s wife and son’s reaction to him walking off is everything.

Who knows where the Atlanta Braves would be without Freddie Freeman?

He’s been the face of the franchise since Chipper Jones retired. Freeman has been through it all, whether that be painful rebuilding seasons or heart-crushing losses in October. With the game on the line, Freeman delivered the game-winning base hit to give Atlanta a crucial 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series vs. the Cincinnati Reds. The best part is who was there to cheer him on.

The presumptive NL MVP came up big when his team needed him the most.

This game and this moment is a microcosm of Freeman’s season, the Braves’ season and the 2020 MLB season in general. Freeman was arguably the most well-known player to contract the coronavirus. His case had him out of commission towards the start of the season. He could have easily opted out, but wanted to win big like this for his teammates, his family and Braves Country.

The Braves had seemingly nothing but disaster occur to its starting rotation, outside of Max Fried, Ian Anderson and Kyle Wright at times. Atlanta won its third straight NL East division crown by way of its dominating offense, slick defense and deep bullpen. But in a game against NL Cy Young contender Trevor Bauer, nobody could get a run across for the Braves…until Freeman in the 13th.

Atlanta has not advanced in the postseason since 2001. Though this may be a weird best-of-three NL Wild Card series, any advancement would be seen as progress for this NL contending team. Atlanta is expected to beat Cincinnati in the Wild Card round and beat either the Chicago Cubs or the Miami Marlins in the NLDS to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2020 NLCS.

All year long, the Braves have looked to their big bats to shine the light in their darkest hour. Whether it be Marcell Ozuna, Ronald Acuña Jr., Ozzie Albies, Dansby Swanson, Austin Riley or whoever, one star has shined the brightest. Freeman had his best regular season to date and may have changed the course of Atlanta baseball postseason futility with one swing of the bat.

Having his wife and three-year-old son there to watch him walk off is why sports matter.
