If you need some football in your life on Thursday, then the New York Jets and Denver Broncos have you covered.
At the conclusion of Week 3 of this NFL season, fans lamented at the thought of having to sit through the Thursday Night Football matchup between the winless New York Jets and the injury-riddled Denver Broncos. But after the presidential debate debacle on Tuesday, this game has flipped from must-not to must-watch.
All eyes will be on the Jets this game, because there was an overwhelming belief that head coach Adam Gase could be canned if the team dropped to 0-4. However, NFL Mediaās Ian Rapoport reported early Thursday morning that Gaseās job is not hanging in the balance prior to the game, as those with decision-making knowledge say that firing him would be damaging to quarterback Sam Darnold.
Yet, Gase hasnāt done much to live up to his reputation as being an offensive guru. The Jets rank dead last in total yards (791) and points scored (37) through the first three weeks of the season. Thatās not good, regardless of the subpar talent on the roster. This is perhaps the Jetsā best opportunity to win this entire campaign. If they fail to do so, theyād be the overwhelming favorites to secure the first overall pick.
As for the Broncos, they are still without quarterback Drew Lock, as heās still working back from a shoulder injury suffered in Week 2. However, they wonāt have backup Jeff Driskel as the No. 1 quarterback on the roster, as it will be Brett Rypien instead. After Driskel underperformed this past weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Rypien entered in relief, where he threw for 53 yards and an interception. Now, he gets his first official NFL start against a Jets defense that has surrendered 239 yards per game to opposing quarterbacks. However, he wonāt running back Phillip Lindsay to lean upon on Thursday.
