The Padres and Cardinals have a do-or-die Game 3 to advance to the NLDS.
The San Diego Padres were facing elimination Thursday night and fell into an early 4-0 hole. Then the bats woke up and the Padres couldn’t stop hitting home runs. Wil Myers and Fernando Tatis Jr. each launched two and Manny Machado added one of his own.
The St. Louis Cardinals kept fighting and pulled to a score of 11-9 in the top of the ninth. But the bullpen came through for San Diego and got the team to Friday’s Game 3.
What to watch for in Padres-Cardinals Game 3
This has easily been the most exciting series this week. The Cardinals won Game 1 after a regular season that saw the team regularly playing doubleheaders over the final six weeks of the schedule. No rest, no problem.
Then there is the upstart Padres. The team broke a postseason drought dating back to 2006 and when all hope seemed lost, the stars on the team woke up and decided to mash home runs to extend the season.
The obvious focus for San Diego is on Tatis Jr. and Machado. We have a rising star and an established one who can finally get major national attention by advancing with a big Game 3.
But pitching is going to be the ultimate factor in a victory for either team. The Padres got bailed out by the offense in Game 2 as the staff allowed nine runs. This came after allowing seven runs to the Cardinals in Game 1.
The Padres are basically winging it without Mike Clevinger and Dinelson Lamet on the roster. Another bullpen game is the likely scenario.
The Cardinals are in much better shape with Jack Flaherty taking the mound in Game 3. Fans may notice his 4.91 ERA as rather high, but it is important to remember one nine-run outing in September raised his ERA from 3.08 to 5.52. The season was too short to level it out again.
Playoff baseball has a habit of taking expected storylines and making them obsolete. What appears true is that fans are in for another exciting game Friday night.
