By dismantling Texas A&M, Alabama football should move up to the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25 because Clemson hasn’t played anybody.

There was a chance it could happen, but Alabama football should be ranked No. 1 next week.

By embarrassing the Texas A&M Aggies yet again, the Alabama Crimson Tide has done enough to at least temporarily take the No. 1 spot away from the southeastern rival Clemson Tigers heading into Week 6. Even though Texas A&M isn’t the least bit good, Alabama will get to No. 1 because the Crimson Tide slaughtered the No. 13 team in the nation in their own building on Saturday.

Alabama will be the No. 1 team until Clemson takes it back in Week 7.

This move to No. 1 from No. 2 is strictly on the basis of Clemson hasn’t played anyone yet this season. Though the Virginia Cavaliers may not be all that far off from what the Aggies are in the grand scheme of things, Alabama will have a win over a ranked opponent, while Clemson will not. However, Clemson has a shot to retake the top spot by beating the Miami Hurricanes in Week 7.

That’ll be a battle between a pair of ACC title contenders. Clemson is the best program in college football right now, but Miami looks to be well on its way back towards being “The U” under second-year head coach Manny Diaz. What if Miami upsets Clemson? Do the ‘Canes get to No. 1? That might be a bit of a stretch, but Miami is a more quality opponent than Texas A&M is.

Regardless, it was a complete and utter thorough beatdown of Texas A&M by the hands of the Crimson Tide. They hung over half a hundred on Jimbo Fisher’s team, who may seriously regret paying him all that money to be grandiose, glorified mediocre crapola in the SEC West. The Aggies may not finish better than fifth place in their own division. They have problems in College Station.

As for Alabama, there’s a reason the Crimson Tide are favored to win the SEC and get to the College Football Playoff for the sixth time in seven years. Every year, head coach Nick Saban will do this to an SEC opponent, and oftentimes, it will be to one of his many proteges who have never beaten him before. Today, Fisher was Saban’s whipping boy and that was simply undeniable.

By getting a massive blowout win over a top-15 team, Alabama has done enough to get to No. 1.
