The Cardinals lost legends Lou Brock and Bob Gibson in a matter of months

Gibson was a titan of baseball. They literally lowered the mound because he was so dominant. Gibson served as his own bullpen, as he had 255 complete games and 251 career wins. The stats don’t do him justice in just how dominant he was on the mound, but Gibson was even more of an idol off the field.

Just hours after the Cardinals season ended thanks to the San Diego Padres, they were forced to mourn the loss of that icon. Gibson was a pillar of the organization, and a father or grandfather figure to many long-term players on the Cardinals roster. This includes Yadier Molina, who reflected on Gibson’s life in an interview Saturday night.

Bob Gibson’s death hit Yadi extraordinarily hard, and that was obvious in his interview

“I don’t want to talk about myself right now. I just heard the news about Bob Gibson…to lose a legend like that, it’s hard,” Molina said. “Yeah, we lose a game, yeah, we lose a series, but without him, we lose one great man. It’s hard.”

Gibson had been fighting cancer for years, and finally succumbed yesterday at the age of 84. Gibson also had a strong relationship with Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty, who shared his thoughts after the team’s loss Saturday night.

“He’s a legend first and foremost. He’s someone who I was lucky enough to develop a relationship with, I was lucky enough to learn from. You don’t get that from people like that very often,” Flaherty said.

Gibson played a large role in the development of this battery, even at a tender age. His influence on MLB, including race relations, cannot be understated. He’ll never be forgotten.
