Kansas football coach Les Miles tests positive for COVID-19
Kansas football coach Les Miles has tested positive for COVID-19 and will work remotely until he’s cleared to return to in-person activities.
Positive COVID-19 tests seem to be inevitable among college football programs playing a season in 2020. The key is limiting the spread of the virus. Programs have systems in place to test for the virus and the Kansas football program revealed a positive test for head coach Les Miles. The Kansas athletic department announced the news Thursday.
Les Miles tests positive for COVID-19
Miles released a short statement as he prepares to quarantine from home.
"“Today, I was notified that I have tested positive for COVID-19. I am beginning the isolation process at my home and will continue to fulfill my head coach responsibilities remotely. Although I will not physically be able to attend practice for the time being, I will be using the technology available for remote working to stay connected during staff meetings, meetings with players, etc. Thank you for your prayers and support in advance. I look forward to beating this virus and returning back to be with my team in person very soon. Rock Chalk!”"
From a football standpoint, Kansas does not play again until Oct. 17. Miles could realistically be back for that game given he doesn’t face any complications from the virus. Whether he is on the sidelines or not may not matter for a Kansas team that has lost by a combined score of 94-21 in two conference games. The season opener saw Coastal Carolina come to town and leave with a 38-23 victory.
There is also the personal part of this news. Miles is 66 years old is thus in a high-risk group for complications from the virus. Hopefully, he manages to pull through and be back on the sidelines fully cleared with no long-term negative effects. Kansas being idle this week worked out in their favor and they hope they’ll have Miles back on the sideline for their next game.
