The former Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman was befuddled at Xavier Woods’ comments on effort

At the start of every NFL season, the bar was set for the Dallas Cowboys: Super Bowl or bust. In 2020, it’s been a bust so far, as they own a 1-3 record and sit a half a game behind the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC East lead. Most of that is due to Dallas’ historically putrid defense. Cowboys fans aren’t happy with their performance, and they probably didn’t like what they heard from safety Xavier Woods.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Woods said that it’s not possible to go full speed the whole game. That clip was played during ESPN’s SportsCenter on Thursday for former Cowboys defensive lineman and current network analyst Marcus Spears, who sat with a look of utter befuddlement on his face before speaking his mind.

Woods’ effort comment ill-timed

Spears properly represented every Cowboys fan across the world after hearing that comment on effort. They don’t want or need to hear about it with that squad’s current woes!

The Cowboys have had a brutal start to the 2020 season under new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. Through four games, the Cowboys rank 30th in total defense (430.5 yards/game), 23rd in passing defense (258 yards/game) and 31st in rushing defense (172.5 yards/game). But the Cowboys own one dubious distinction, and that’s that they have allowed the most points in the league with 146, which is also the most points the Cowboys have surrendered to start the season in their franchise’s history.

Cowboys fans are calling for the head of Nolan, but he has the support of head coach Mike McCarthy. The team still has 12 more games to turn things around. It certainly doesn’t help that the team has lost Gerald McCoy for the season before it even started, and that they have Leighton Vander Esch, Chidobe Awuzie and Sean Lee on the injured reserve.

Woods and the Cowboys won’t have to test their stamina too much this upcoming Sunday, as they face the New York Giants and their league-worst offense. If Dallas can’t stop them, it may be time for Dallas to officially worry.
