Mike Brosseau’s eighth-inning home run put the Rays ahead of the Yankees in the decisive Game 5 of the ALDS.

The fairytale continues for Mike Brosseau, the undrafted free agent who just became a postseason hero for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Brosseau battled with pitcher Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the eighth inning with the game between the Rays and New York Yankees tied 1-1 before getting a hold of a pitch and sending it into the stands.

The at-bat hadn’t started well for Brosseau either. He was struck out looking and swinging on the first two pitches but managed to keep himself alive long enough to smash the home run on the 10th pitch.

Mike Brosseau’s journey from undrafted to ALDS hero is incredible

You couldn’t have picked a more unlikely hero than Brosseau. He is beloved in the Rays clubhouse for his positivity and attitude, which are the same attributes that helped him overcome being undrafted out of Oakland University in Michigan in 2016.

Tampa Bay gave him a shot in their organization and he worked his way to a call-up last year. This year, he’s been a key figure with a batting average of .302 and five home runs. The blast that ultimate put away the Yankees was his first in the postseason. It was certainly one to remember.

Thanks to Brosseau’s home run, the Rays will move on to the ALCS to face the Houston Astros with a chance to make it to the World Series for the first time since 2008, when they lost to the Phillies. This will be their first ALCS appearance since then.

They’re one step closer to making it an incredible sports year for the city of Tampa Bay, which has already witnessed an NHL title for the Lightning.
