Baker Mayfield isn’t playing around when it comes to Oklahoma-Texas.
Baker Mayfield is a Sooners legend, having won the Heisman Trophy during his time in Norman. He and Kyler Murray became back-to-back Heisman transfer quarterbacks for Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma and frequently flaunted that success against the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Showdown.
Yet, this year’s version of arguably the biggest rivalry game in the sport is lacking, as the teams come into the game with a combined record of 3-3. The winner, and loser, will dramatically impact their seasons one way or another with an all-important result on Saturday. Mayfield knows this from afar and took a shot at Texas to try and rally the troops.

Mayfield’s message should be sent directly to Sam Ehlinger, trying to make one last impactful statement against Oklahoma in a year they’re struggling to find an identity. On the other side, as talented as Spencer Rattler is, his careless mistakes should make for some opportunistic moments on the Texas defense.
Despite Oklahoma’s two-game win streak in this game, Texas does own the all-time record of 62-48-5. Riley and the Sooners are trying to turn the tide and make another statement that the Big 12 still runs through Norman despite their early-season struggles.
Even if Texas isn’t truly ‘back’, the Horns possess all the talent necessary to defeat Oklahoma in what looks to be a down year. This is why a message from Mayfield was even necessary in the first place.
