10 astounding college football stats from Week 6: Travis Etienne is the touchdown king
College football got wild in Week 6 with upset bids all over the place, at least one big man touchdown and some pretty telling defensive performances.
From start to finish, Week 6 of the 2020 college football season was a roller coaster ride.
Upsets were attempted and achieved, offenses went crazy, defenses tried to keep up and fans got as much action as they could handle.
Here are the most astounding stats from another insanely entertaining Saturday of college football:
1. Travis Etienne topples Tim Tebow’s record
Defenses just can’t keep Travis Etienne out of the end zone.
Etienne has at least seven more games to take over the FBS record. Anyone doubt he’ll do it?
2. Ole Miss raises red flags for Alabama’s defense
Lane Kiffin built the current iteration of the Alabama offense. Then he unleashed his offensive genius on the Crimson Tide defense with glee, putting up 48 points in a thrilling 63-48 loss.
Alabama will be glad just to have gotten the win, but Nick Saban will not be happy knowing his defense gave up so many points along with over 600 yards.
On the plus side, the Crimson Tide were more than capable of keeping up with Kiffin and company. Najee Harris set a single-game record for Alabama with five touchdowns.
3. Georgia scores a 300-pound touchdown.
Georgia defensive end Jalen Carter lined up as a fullback at the goal line on Saturday and scored a magnificent touchdown.
It was a score as rare as it was beautiful.
4. Georgia’s defense is outscoring opponents
The Bulldogs haven’t started games brightly in 2020, but they certainly know how to finish them.
Kirby Smart‘s outfit allowed 21 points to Tennessee in the first half but blanked them in the second en route to a 44-21 victory capped by a 20-yard fumble return touchdown.
This is becoming a trend.
5. LSU’s defense is historically bad
It’s not just that LSU’s defense has taken a step back in 2020. They got a running start and leaped in the wrong direction.
The Tigers have discovered what happens when you lose one of the best defensive coordinators in America and replace him with Bo Pelini. The end result: Losing to Missouri by giving up 45 points. Ouch.
6. The Tigers aren’t familiar with losing records
A terrible defense and all the departures from last year’s title-winning team have put LSU in a pretty unfamiliar hole.
The biggest worry for the Tigers is how difficult it will be to get back to .500. They travel to face Florida next with ranked matchups against Auburn, Alabama and Texas A&M looming. A losing record for the season is not out of the question at this point.
7. Oklahoma has a late-game problem
Even though they bested Texas in 4OT, Oklahoma has got to address their late-game defense. It has been absolutely horrendous.
No wonder the Sooners have blown three straight double-digit leads.
8. Turnovers couldn’t save Tom Herman this time
Normally, forcing three turnovers in a game is a good way to launch a team to victory.
It wasn’t enough for Tom Herman’s Texas.
Having three turnovers of their own didn’t help the Longhorns.
9. Jimbo Fisher can win the big game…if it’s against Florida
Jimbo Fisher was rightly roasted for failing to challenge Alabama last week. The coach now has his first win against a Top 5 team after Texas A&M upset Florida, so he sure had a great response.
Or maybe Saturday’s result is just what Fisher does to Florida.
The 41-38 win was exactly the kind of performance the Aggies expected when they signed Fisher up for a giant contract.
10. Mack Browns’ UNC is cooking
North Carolina overcame Virginia Tech in a high scoring battle, and they needed every point.
Lucky for the Tar Heels, their offense is looking mighty formidable these days.
Sam Howell let the way through the air with three touchdowns and 257 yards, but the ground game really kept things ticking over. Michael Carter had 214 yards and two touchdowns while Javonte Williams was second on the team with 169 yards and two touchdowns.
