The once-confident Houston Astros third baseman had a bad day at the office against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday

The Houston Astros have embraced the role of being MLB’s villains upon their entrance into the 2020 postseason due to their sign-stealing scandal in the 2017 season. Yet, one player who was once so confident and cocky has been uncharacteristically tame this season. Of course, we’re talking about third baseman Alex Bregman. Even with his switch in personality, baseball diehards aren’t too keen on seeing him succeed on the field. Those individuals were in for a treat on Monday evening.

Bregman had an unlucky day during Game 2 of the ALCS against the Tampa Bay Rays. In his five plate appearances against Charlie Morton, Aaron Loup and Nick Anderson, Bregman hit the ball and put up huge exit velocities. The thing is, they all ended on outs. Talk about a tough break for last year’s AL MVP runner-up.

Bregman’s bad day won’t garner much sympathy outside of Houston

Astros fans were obviously bummed out that their star third baseman couldn’t find an opening in the field. But outside of Houston, the rest of MLB’s fanatics relished in the poor outing.

Despite this bad day, Bregman has been solid throughout Houston’s postseason run to the ALCS, from their Wild Card Round sweep of the Minnesota Twins to their ALDS victory over the rival Oakland Athletics. Entering Game 2 of the ALCS on Monday, Bregman posted a .346 batting average and .952 OPS while recording nine hits, one home run and two RBI.

With this rough outing, the Astros are facing a 2-0 deficit to the top-seeded Rays. The Astros do have a chance to bounce back in this series, but they’ve struggled knocking in runners in scoring position thus far, as they’ve gone 3-for-16 in those situations through the first two games of the Championship Series. That’s not ideal.

Who knows, maybe things would have turned out differently had Bregman not hit it directly to a Tampa Bay fielder? One of life’s many mysteries. But Astros haters aren’t imagining that. They’re just enjoying Houston’s misery.
