Alabama football has to be the No. 1 team in the country entering Week 8.

It’s been a great ride for Clemson football, but Alabama football has to take the spot now.

The No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide imposed their will on the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs in the second half of their high-profile Week 7 game. Georgia held a 24-20 lead at halftime, but Alabama rattled of 24 unanswered points to beat the Dawgs for the sixth time in a row. Though the No. 1 Clemson Tigers eviscerated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 73-7, Alabama is officially the top banana.

When you beat someone good, you should be rewarded handsomely for it.

Alabama improves to 4-0 on the season with convincing wins over two ranked teams in the Texas A&M Aggies back in Week 5 and now over Georgia. Even in defeat, the Dawgs aren’t going to drop all that far from their No. 3 ranking. They should remain a top-10 team in the country, while Texas A&M has since rattled off two quality conference wins in a row now as the No. 11 ranked team.

Yes, Clemson handled the Miami Hurricanes last week, but the ‘Canes hadn’t beaten anybody of note. Alabama beat Texas A&M, who upset the Florida Gators at home, and Georgia, who had blowout wins over the Auburn Tigers and the Tennessee Volunteers. It’s not really Clemson’s fault that the rest of the ACC can’t hang with them. At least Alabama has SEC teams to challenge them.

Alabama just put up 41 points on the same Georgia defense that had allowed a combined 37 in the first three weeks of the season vs. the Arkansas Razorbacks, Auburn and Tennessee. All three of the teams Georgia has beaten are 2-2 in SEC-only play. What puts Alabama over the top of Clemson for at least this week is they have beaten more quality teams than the Tigers have.

The good news for Clemson is the Tigers won’t lose a conference game this season whereas the Alabama defense will unfortunately cost the Crimson Tide at least one SEC game this year. We don’t know when it is coming, but it will happen at some point. Alabama is absurdly talented, especially at the wide receiver position, but no team in the SEC gets out unscathed in 2020.

You can’t say Clemson’s resume is better than Alabama’s at this juncture without pulling teeth.
