Colin Cowherd is officially the president of the Brian Kelly fan club with this tweet
By John Buhler
Colin Cowherd is defending Brian Kelly after a narrow Notre Dame football victory.
Colin Cowherd should be the official spokesman of Brian Kelly and Notre Dame football.
The national sports talk host went to Kelly’s defense by saying how incredibly hard it is to recruit at a championship level at a rural Catholic school with hard academic standards. This isn’t the first time he’s come to Kelly and Notre Dame’s defense over this, nor will it be the last. Notre Dame barely survived the flightless Louisville Cardinals on Saturday afternoon, winning 12-7 at home.
Brian Kelly is underrated, but Notre Dame usually gets the benefit of the doubt.
All those things Cowherd outlines and always outlines are true. Having to recruit top talent to South Bend, Indiana to a Catholic school with a rigorous academic workload isn’t easy. However, Notre Dame is the biggest brand in college football and has the most lucrative television contract with NBC. The national independent picks its own schedule and doesn’t play for a conference title.
Though we all understand fully that Kelly is the best head coach Notre Dame has had in a generation, his program is at a place where it needs to stay in the top 10 and contend for College Football Playoff berths, or at least be a staple at getting into New Year’s Six bowls. This is a good program with a great coach, but when will Notre Dame be truly a great program once again?
Had Notre Dame played better vs. Louisville, Cowherd wouldn’t have had to defend Kelly again.
