What could have been? Myles Garrett said he almost went to Ohio State

Myles Garrett dominated at Texas A&M, but he almost ended up at Ohio State where he would have terrorized the Big Ten with other Buckeye studs.

Can you imagine what Ohio State’s 2014, 2015 or 2016 defense might have looked like with Myles Garrett on the edge?

Garrett himself wonders.

Even though the former No. 1 overall pick was plenty dominant in his time as an All-American at Texas A&M, he considered what could have been during an interview with FOX Sports Cleveland.

Garrett picked the Aggies because they played in the SEC, his sister went there, they offered a great education and he wouldn’t have to move far from home. The alternate choice?

“My other choice was going to be Ohio State if I didn’t go to Texas A&M,” Garrett said.

Garrett was a five-star prospect in the class of 2014. He would have arrived in Columbus a year after Joey Bosa.

“If I went to Ohio State we would have had the best run of defensive ends of all-time,” Garrett said.

He’s right too.

Bosa had 21 tackles for loss as a sophomore at Ohio State while Garrett posted 14 as a true freshman at Texas A&M. If they lined up together in 2014, the Buckeyes front would have been even more spectacular than it was with 110 tackles for loss on the season.

That 2014 national title run might have given way to another in 2015 when they missed out on a playoff spot because of a single loss to Michigan State. The Buckeyes would have given Alabama more of a challenge in the semifinal at least.

Garrett’s presence would have been even more important in 2016 after Bosa’s departure. He could have bridged the gap between Nick Bosa‘s emergence in 2017 and Chase Young in 2018. He might not have been able to make up for Ohio State’s 31-0 drubbing at the hands of Clemson in the playoff, but he would have caused Deshaun Watson something extra to think about.

Of course, things played out the way they did and it may be for the best. Perhaps Garrett wouldn’t have developed the same alongside Bosa. Maybe he would have stifled the development of Nick Bosa. Who knows? But it makes for a fun hypothetical.
