There are four key points to remember as you prepare your rosters for week 6 of the fantasy football schedule.

  1. Start Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray or Aaron Rodgers if you want a quarterback who scores a lot of points.
  2. Expect the unexpected.  Last week was the first “Bye” week of the season and fantasy football players from the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers rode the bench. Thankfully, underrated players like Chargers QB Justin Herbert scored 27.36 fantasy football points (FFP) and Pittsburgh wide receiver Chase Claypool had 3 touchdown catches and 46.2 FFP.
  3. You will not see any Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans Saints  or Seattle Seahawks on the “Surefire Starters”, “Underrated” or “Sleeper” lists because it is their “Bye” week.
  4. If you drafted wisely, you have a suitable substitute to start in place of players like Derek Carr, Justin Herbert, Drew Brees or Russell Wilson.  If you question the strength of your bench, this is a good week to evaluate available personnel and make the necessary adjustments to your roster.

Surefire Starters at Quarterback

  • Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, would probably prefer to beat the Raiders than lose 40-32 at home, but Mahomes had great fantasy statistics.  He completed 22 of 43 passes for 340 yards and 2 touchdown passes.  Mahomes will have to be at the top of his game against the Buffalo Bills next Monday, October 19.
  • Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals quarterback, is ranked No. 4 among quarterbacks due to Dak Prescott’s injury.  He and the Cardinals face a vulnerable Dallas Cowboys defense next Monday night.  Murray is a dual threat with 8 touchdown passes and 5 touchdowns rushing.  He should score 25+ FFP against Dallas.
  • Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers quarterback, faces another challenge as he and the Packers face Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers late Sunday afternoon.  He has moved up to the No.5 spot among active fantasy football quarterbacks.  Expect 20+ points from Rodgers against the Bucs.

Riding the Bench

Note:  These quarterbacks have week 6 ”Byes”.

  • Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders quarterback
  • Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback
  • Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints quarterback
  • Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks quarterback

Underrated

  • Ryan Fitzpatrick, Miami Dolphins quarterback, completed 22 out of 28 passes for 350 yards and 3 touchdowns in week 5.  The veteran quarterback has been climbing up the QB rankings each week.  Right now he is No. 6 among active quarterbacks..

Overrated

  • Joe Flacco, New York Jets quarterback, is still getting accustomed to the Jets offense.  The O-line was ineffective blocking for the former Raven QB and there were too many dropped passes in his debut against the Arizona Cardinals.

Sleeper QB of the Week

  • Mathew Stafford, Detroit Lions quarterback, should be ready to score at will against the No. 29 team defense in the NFL.  As poorly as the Jacksonville defense has played, the Lions defense is No. 28 in the league.  Look for the Stafford-to-wide receiver Kenny Golladay connection to lead the 1-3 Lions to a much-needed win.
