One thing is certain entering Sunday night — the NFC West is the division to beat in the NFL. Three of the four teams currently are sitting with records above .500 while the 49ers (2-3) currently hold the NFC Champions title. Their battle to return to the postseason is far from over, but they’ll need to show they can hang with the Los Angeles Rams as the game of the evening.

Los Angeles (4-1) have rebounded on offense despite the team’s offseason departures of Todd Gurley and Brandin Cooks. Jared Goff has returned to his 2018 Pro Bowl form while building a thriving connection between Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp.

Despite a limited defense, the Rams have impressed early on all three areas of the game. Currently ranking in the top 10 of yards allowed (1,521), yards per game (304.2), sacks (20) and total passing yards allowed (989), Los Angeles under the direction of Brandon Staley have kept them in contention.

Speaking of defense, that’s the main area of concern for San Francisco. Already short-handed without the likes of Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas and Dee Ford, the once feared unit only has collected nine sacks and three interceptions. In the secondary, the 49ers have seen growth with former Pro Bowler Jason Verrett, while Richard Sherman remains on the injured reserved with a calf injury.

The real storyline will be on Jimmy Garoppolo’s return to the starting role. Last week against the Dolphins, San Francisco elected to bench their starter after he struggled to regain confidence, finishing the afternoon with 77 yards and a pair of interceptions. For the season, Garoppolo has thrown for 476 yards and four touchdowns.
