The Champions League campaign kicks off this week. In one of the marquee games of the week, Bayern Munich host Atletico Madrid at the Allianz Arena. Bayern are the defending champions after becoming the first time to win every Champions League game they played in a season. Atletico were knocked out in the quarterfinal by RB Leipzig last season.
Bayern Munich captured their sixth Champions League title and believe they can repeat this year. While Bayern lost key midfielder Thiago, they added additional depth that should only make them even more difficult to beat. After being forced to play a makeshift backline with players out of their natural position, Bayern reinforced their defense. While the most notable addition was Leroy Sane, who should start next to Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski and give Bayern another world-class attacker. Gnabry and Lewandowski were dominant en route to the treble, combining for 78 goals last year.
Atletico are still trying to breakthrough in the Champions League for the first time in club history. Since 2012, Atleti have won the Europa League twice and reached two Champions League finals but are still trying to win Europe’s biggest prize for the first time. Under manager Diego Simeone, Atletico have been one of the best defensive teams in Europe. However, that has come at the price of being entertaining to watch at times. Simeone will use a very defensive gameplan against a team as explosive as Bayern. With five key players sidelined with injuries or coronavirus positive tests, Atleti will likely try to steal a point from Bayern.
