Mike McCarthy has to make some changes after a brutal start to the season.

The Dallas Cowboys are a total mess and are still atop the NFC East after six games. That tells you everything you need to know about that division.

Mike McCarthy was supposed to come in as this offensive guru after reportedly taking a year just to learn more about the modern game. His offense was humming along until Dak Prescott got hurt, and then it looked like a high school team Monday night against the Arizona Cardinals.

The defense has been a disaster all season and that also falls on McCarthy. He is the leader of the team and will be responsible for what happens on all sides of the ball. That is where it starts for McCarthy in terms of changes being made to avoid Jerry Jones firing him at the end of the season.

3 changes McCarthy needs to make to survive

1. Fire Mike Nolan

The Cowboys defense is allowing just over 410 yards per game and over 173 yards on the ground alone. It is easy for these numbers to be skewed if a team allows garbage time passing yards at the end of blowout wins. However, the Cowboys only have two victories this season and one was a last-second comeback against the Atlanta Falcons.

Teams are running all over the Cowboys and the lowest point total allowed this season was the 20 points given up to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1. Since then, teams have scored at least 34 points in every game. The lowly New York Giants put up 34 on this defense!

Anonymous players have come out and said this coaching staff is unprepared. The worst aspect of the team is the defense and they simply can’t stop other NFL offenses. Prescott lighting up opposing defense at the start of the season is the only reason why this team isn’t 0-6.

This defense just needs fresh eyes on it. The scoring is unacceptable and the offense isn’t going to score as much without Prescott. McCarthy needs to focus on the offense and make it clear to Jerry Jones that bringing in Nolan just isn’t working out.
