Odell Beckham Jr is great at catching things like footballs, but doesn’t think he’ll catch COVID.

We are closing in on a year of the world being engulfed in a pandemic that has done unspeakable damage. Economies have been shelled, the way we live has been altered (perhaps permanently), and over one million people have died.

If only Odell Beckham Jr had been in charge of things from the start, maybe things would be different. After all, in case you didn’t know this, he’s such a hardcore badass that the virus would take one look at him and quietly shuffle back out the door.

You might be saying to yourself that there’s no Doctor Strange multiverse reality in which that could be true, but Odell is living in the one endgame in which such a thing is. According to the man himself, COVID is no match for him.

No, seriously he said this:

It’s way too easy to destroy Odell for this, but what he’s saying is actually kind of dangerous. We live in a post-facts world, where hundreds of thousands of people dying in this country isn’t enough for some people to take the glue stick out of their mouth for a few seconds to realize this COVID isn’t a hoax.

Odell isn’t crossing over into COVID denial territory, nor is this a flat earth truther comment, but it’s not helpful. The words themselves aren’t malicious; this is just trash talk directed at a virus rather than an opposing cornerback, but it’s actively working against rational thought and logic.

There’s a line in Scream in which the killers say that movies don’t make psychos they just make psychos more creative. The point was that we shouldn’t blame violent movies for violent crimes that were already going to happen regardless. This is kind of that; in an age where using a platform like the one Odell has amplifies a message more than it ever has, taking the piss out of a virus that many people believe isn’t real is corny and lame.

Odell isn’t making anyone deny COVID exists with his comments, he’s just making it easier for stupid people to feel comfortable being stupid.
