Florida State football beating then-No. 5 North Carolina was supposed to be a jumping-off point for Mike Norvell’s team but it turns out, it was just a fluke.

You know that scene in The Waterboy where Rob Schneider’s character realizes the South Central Louisiana State University Mud Dogs aren’t good anymore? Well, maybe you know it by the popular meme/gif “Oh, no we suck again!” because that sums up the state of Florida State football fans today after getting whooped by Louisville, 48-16

This comes one week after Florida State upset then-No. 5 North Carolina in a game that looked like Mike Norvell’s team had turned their corner in their multiple-year-long rebuild and there were some good things to look forward to for Seminoles fans.

Well, that good feeling lasted one week, because Florida State football sucks again.

Florida State football has a lot of work yet to do

Florida State needed to hang on for the victory against the Tar Heels but it was still a win vs. a top-five foe and quarterback Jordan Travis looked like he would be a gamer and leader under center. He experienced some significant growing pains against the Cardinals defense and the turnaround for Norvell’s team won’t be the quick fix that win vs. UNC suggested it could be.

This is a team that will require multiple top-15 recruiting classes and some special five-star talent and better coaching before it is able to compete for even a third-place finish in their division.

Florida State football fans aren’t going to be patient forever, especially not after the end of the Jimbo Fisher era expired quicker than last week’s leftovers and the Willie Taggart era is something they’d like to forget entirely. But it’s a sad and all-too-real wake-up call they experienced vs. Louisville, who is much better than their record would indicate after a narrow defeat to Notre Dame last week.

Florida State should be better than this, but it’s just more of the same sad football fans have seen and unfortunately come to expect.

When will it change? And when will Florida State be back? I’m not sure, but it definitely isn’t this year. And it may not be next year either at this rate.
