Joe Burrow almost led an epic comeback but was outgunned by Baker Mayfield and the Browns.

What you’re seeing on Sunday you probably saw on Saturday, and that was extraordinarily true in Cincinnati. The clashing of two Heisman Trophy winners produced an instant classic in what could be the first of many incredible meetings between Baker Mayfield and Joe Burrow.

We weren’t ever able to see the two battle it out in college, but their first meeting in the NFL was worth the wait.

After a back-and-forth game that saw both quarterbacks make mistakes and somehow avoid extreme danger, Burrow masterfully led the Bengals down the field to score what appeared to be the game-winning touchdown.

It was vintage Joey B, and something that LSU fans will be able to appreciate from his days of looking similarly magical on the bayou. But something that LSU fans might not recognize is Burrow getting caught by another quarterback’s performance that edged his out as the best of the day.

On the ensuing drive, Baker Mayfield was dealing, and looked every bit like the guy Sooners fans watched at Oklahoma and Browns fans were hoping they’d get when he was drafted. Baker answered by hitting Donovan Peoples-Jones and stealing the comeback away from Burrow.

It was a duel, to say the least, and one we may have plenty more of in our future. Burrow absolutely seems to be the answer to the Bengals’ prayers and has Franchise Quarterback written all over him. Baker has ebbed and flowed in his first few seasons but it seems as though Kevin Stefanski is the third time charm needed to unlock Baker’s potential.
