The reason the New York Jets passed on Patrick Mahomes should induce Gang Green vomiting

The New York Jets‘ flawed logic behind passing on Patrick Mahomes is why they are the Jets.

In the robust history of all things disaster, this is the Jets-iest thing the Jets have ever done in their existence as a professional football franchise. This is worse than the Butt Fumble, the Rich Kotite era and the utter madness that exists under current head coach Adam Gase. Former general manager Mike Maccagnan left the world no doubt over the GOB Bluth huge mistake he had made.

Brian Costello of The New York Post wrote, “A recent draft mistake is going to be on the minds of Jets fans Sunday as they watch Patrick Mahomes and the [Kansas City] Chiefs almost certainly embarrass the Jets.”

“Mahomes could have been a Jet in 2017, but former general manager Mike Maccagnan passed on him with the No. 6 pick because he believed the Jets might already have their quarterback of the future in Christian Hackenberg, and if they didn’t, they would grab him in the 2018 draft, which was being viewed as a more QB-rich draft.”

Mike Maccagnan made the worst evaluation of quarterback talent in NFL history

Not only did Maccagnan draft a quarterback with the No. 51 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft that nobody on the planet but him thought was draftable, ahead of Pro Bowlers like Deion Jones, Cody Whitehair, Kevin Byard, Yannick Ngakoue and Austin Hooper, but he thought Christian Hackenberg was the future at quarterback in New York and not the gunslinger from Texas Tech.

I am so sorry, Jets fans. You deserve so much better than this god awful monstrosity of a football organization you have been subjected to for generations. This decade has been nothing short of a debacle. Your favorite franchise is by far and away the worst team in the 2020 NFL season. Now, you’re about to get your barn doors blown off as a 20.5-point underdog to the Chiefs on Sunday.

If you want to pick another team to root for in the rest of your life, I would not blame you. This is worse than the Portland Trail Blazers passing on Michael Jordan with the No. 2 overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft for Sam Bowie. Clyde Drexler was an all-time great at the two-guard, so at least that draft-day logic passed the smell taste. Are you done throwing up yet, Gang Green? We’ll wait.

Hackenberg could not hit the broad side of a barn when he played for the Penn State Nittany Lions. The only reasons he got drafted was all the hype surrounding him coming out of high school, Allen Robinson being an angel sent down from heaven to catch balls from atrocious throwers of the football and Maccagnan’s deplorably horrendous misevaluation of NFL talent.

Admittedly, he did make a great pick, in theory, with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Jamal Adams is one heck of a defensive stalwart at safety. Anybody who watched a snap of an LSU Tigers football game from 2014 to 2016 could have told you that. Too bad the football culture in East Rutherford was abominable and he got himself traded out of town before year four.

As the Jets take their worst beating of the year, let it sink in that you as a fanbase must hold ownership accountable. The Johnsons pick the wrong guy every single time, and I feel so utterly sorry for you. Even poorly-run teams should taste the postseason every five years or so in the NFL, especially with an expanded playoff field. Now, Trevor Lawrence may want to stay in school.

There will never be a worse example of general manager malpractice than the Jets’ 2017 botchjob.
