Penn State football coach James Franklin confirmed sophomore running back Noah Cain will be out for the remainder of the season as the injuries mount for the Nittany Lions.

The losses continue to mount at running back for Penn State football. Head coach James Franklin confirmed on Tuesday that sophomore running back Noah Cain has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Cain suffered a lower leg injury in the team’s season-opening loss to Indiana, sustaining the injury on the opening drive. He carried the ball three times for 13 yards before going down. He was seen on the sidelines using crutches in the second half. Now, his 2020 campaign is officially over.

Penn State losses at running back continue to mount

This update is a major bummer for Cain, who missed significant time last season due to an ankle injury. That didn’t stop him from setting the Penn State running backs record for most touchdowns by a freshman, as he finished 2019 with eight scores and 443 yards on 84 carries across 10 games.

Now that Cain is out for the rest of the season, it’s the second piece of bad news for Franklin and the running backs room. Earlier this month, starter Journey Brown was ruled out indefinitely after the team announced he was dealing with an undisclosed medical condition.

With Brown out and Cain leaving the game early in Week 1, Devyn Ford took over as the lead back against Indiana. In the defeat, the sophomore finished with 20 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. Moving forward, he’ll be the lead back for the Nittany Lions and Franklin. Ford had 294 yards and three touchdowns last year as a freshman.
