Five-star prospect Quinn Ewers, the No. 1 quarterback in the class of 2022, announced his decommitment from Texas with Ohio State looming.

In the middle of an already-difficult 2020 season, things just got a little bit worse for Texas and Tom Herman.

On Wednesday night, prized recruit Quinn Ewers, a five-star quarterback in the class of 2022, decommitted from the Longhorns and it now looks like he’s leaning towards a Big Ten power.

In his Twitter post announcing his decommitment, Ewers talked about the challenges he’s faced going through the recruiting process during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said he has taken the time to reassess his options after realizing he didn’t explore them completely when he committed to Texas back in August.

“I will soon have a firm decision on where I will spend the next few formative years of my life and career, and I look forward to sharing that with you,” Ewers concluded.

That last line gives credence to the idea that Ohio State may be making a swoop for the coveted quarterback. They hold all six predictions in the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

Quinn Ewers is the top quarterback prospect for 2022

When it comes to 2022 prospects, Ewers is among the elite. He ranks No. 2 nationally in the 247Sports composite and is No. 1 among all quarterbacks.

Ewers was unstoppable as a sophomore playing for Southlake Carrol in Texas in 2019. He threw for 4,003 yards and 45 touchdowns with just three interceptions. He added 568 yards on the ground while scoring nine rushing touchdowns.

His productivity matches his evaluation.

Gabe Brooks of 247Sports noted his prototypical frame at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds while comparing him to Phillip Rivers and calling him a “dynamic natural playmaker.”

If he does land with Ohio State, it will mean the rich get richer. The Buckeyes have already landed a commitment from five-star quarterback Kyle McCord for the class of 2021. In the class of 2020, they signed Top 50 passer CJ Stroud.

The competition for future starting jobs should be intense.

The consolation for Texas is the fact that they signed two Top 75 quarterbacks in the class of 2020.
