Even the Dallas Cowboys’ biggest homer can’t defend this team, calling them the worst in the league.

2020 was supposed to be the year of the Dallas Cowboys. They hired a former Super Bowl-winning head coach in Mike McCarthy, spent money on big-name free agents and had one of the better draft classes in the league. Despite all of that, the wheels fell off for the Cowboys, as they enter Week 8 with a measly 2-5 record. The fanbase of “America’s Team” is always critical when they don’t live up to the hype. As it turns out, not even Dallas’ biggest homer can even defend their performance.

During an appearance on 95.7 The Game on Thursday, Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin expressed his belief that the Cowboys might be the worst team in the NFL. Yes, even worse than the winless New York Jets!

Irvin extremely disappointed in the Cowboys

“I believe the Cowboys right now may be the worst team in the National Football League,” Irvin said. “I know the Jets haven’t won a game. Would you take the Cowboys over the Jets right now? How can anybody pick the Cowboys at any time when you see what’s happening right, especially what’s going on with that defense. I don’t even know how to explain this. This is just an all-time low for my Cowboys. It hurts. The difference is, I know the Jets look bad. But the Jets were expected to look bad. The Cowboys had people really thinking, including myself, that they were ready to be Super Bowl-bound, and they’ve been a super bust.”

Irvin isn’t lying. Every NFL fan and media pundit expected the Jets to be a brutally bad team. But the Cowboys? It was hard not to pick them as a the NFC East champions and potentially as a Super Bowl contenders. But, those dreams were dashed due to their atrocious defense.

The Cowboys have been victimized by every team they’ve faced this offseason. Injuries to the likes of Leighton Vander Esch and Chidobe Awuzie early on in the season did them no favors. They were victimized by the likes of the Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals and even the Kyler Allen-led Washington Football Team! Through seven games this season, the Cowboys ranked 27th in total defense (408.1 yards allowed per game), 12th in passing defense (229.9 yards/game) and 32nd against the run (178.0 yards/game). Oh, and they’ve surrendered 243 points to the opposition, the most in the league.

On top of the defensive woes, the Cowboys lost quarterback Dak Prescott and offensive tackles Tyron Smith and La’el Collins to season-ending injuries. Andy Dalton is currently in concussion protocol and star running back Ezekiel Elliott is dealing with fumbling issues. Despite all of that, they’re still within striking distance of the divisional lead, but it’s going to be a tough mountain to climb.

Irvin isn’t mad at the Cowboys — he’s just extremely disappointed in them.
