Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence took to Twitter to release a statement following his positive COVID-19 test.

The college football world was hit with some serious news Thursday night when it was announced that Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence received a positive COVID-19 test. The always upbeat signal-caller released a statement shortly after.

“I have tested positive for COVID-19 and my symptoms have been relatively mild while I’m following the protocol from Clemson and the ACC,” Trevor Lawrence said in a statement posted to his Twitter. “The only thing that hurts is missing an opportunity to be with my teammates and play the game that I love. I hate that I can’t be there, but I’ll be watching from isolation and pulling for our guys while I wait for the opportunity to rejoin the team. God bless and Go Tigers!”

There may have been initial hope the test was simply a false positive. However, Lawrence did mention he is dealing with mild symptoms and will now be on a minimum 10-day quarantine away from practice.

The quarterback is a true leader and it shows in his statement. It is easy to believe that his only concern is not being out on the field with his teammates. Let’s hope he does take some time to focus on himself and get healthy soon.

Assuming his recovery goes well, Lawrence is still expected to miss this Saturday’s game against Boston College and the one next week against Notre Dame. The only way that would change is if the test was backdated several days, as the ACC mandates 10 days of isolation for a positive test.

Lawrence is a projected No. 1 overall pick because of more than just his abilities on the field. He has proven himself to be a true leader at the young age of 21 and putting out a statement right away shows the professionalism he already possesses. Now he needs to focus on himself and get right again. This situation is much bigger than football and we wish him the best.
