5 trades the New York Mets new owners can make to get fans excited
1. Trade For Kris Bryant
The Chicago Cubs are moving toward some significant changes to their 2016 world championship core, and Bryant is heading into the final year of his contract before he’ll cash in as a free agent. A short season has to be noted, but Bryant hit just .206/.293/.351 with four home runs and 11 RBI in 147 plate appearances (two home runs and six RBI over a two-game span Sept. 26 and 27).
Since David Wright had injuries derail his career, the Mets have tried multiple players at third base with little in the way of consistent results. Bryant is primarily a third baseman, but he can also play the corner outfield spots for some added utility.
In 15 career games at Citi Field, Bryant has a .300/.382/.500 slash-line with six extra base hits (three home runs), 12 runs scored and 30 total bases. That is surely something the Mets’ front office is aware of, or will be soon, along with Bryant’s numbers over the meaningful samples he’s had at the home parks of three of their division rivals.
Citizen’s Bank Park: .361/.418/.656 slash-line (1.074 OPS), 4 HR, 11 RBI-15 games, 67 plate appearances
Marlins Park: .261/.391/.493 slash-line (.884 OPS), 3 HR, 11 RBI-18 games, 87 plate appearances
Nationals Park: .333/.429/.633 slash-line (1.062 OPS), 3 HR, 9 RBI-17 games, 70 plate appearances
The Mets would surely be ready to give Bryant a long-term deal upon acquiring him. They may have division rivals (Braves, Nationals and Phillies?) ready to compete for Bryant on the trade market, but he would be in good position for a 2021 rebound in the middle of the Mets’ lineup and they should already be considering the shape of their trade offer.
