WWE star and upcoming ‘The Suicide Squad’ actor John Cena talked about WWE during a pandemic, his partnership with Verizon for the new Verizon 5G SuperStadium experience, his role as Peacemaker and tried to settle the Tom Brady vs. Bill Belichick debate.

As a New England Patriots fan and Tampa Bay resident, former WWE superstar John Cena has respect for both Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick.

“Tom Brady and I pretty much lead parallel lives at this point,” he explained. “I moved down to Tampa in 2004, but I’ve loved the Patriots since they started winning. I really enjoy teams that win, and it’s obvious that Tom Brady came down here just so he could be closer to Tampa, I mean, just so he could be closer to the Super Bowl.

“He’s brought that winning mystique to Tampa Bay, and me being a resident of Tampa Bay, it kind of works great for me. I really enjoyed how the Patriots handled their organization and how they went about their business, but I think a lot of that is a testament to Tom Brady.”

As for the Brady vs. Belichick debate, Cena isn’t taking a definitive side, though he admitted Brady’s brilliance has translated to his new situation with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers more easily than Belichick’s has with a new group in New England.

“We’ll never be able to settle it,” he said. “You can’t look past the wisdom of both Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. Now, Bill Belichick’s wisdom with a group of folks that have accrued a similar amount of wisdom, I think the system will work. I just think he’s had to go through such a talent shift that it’s difficult to bestow his wisdom and applicable knowledge on people who are just trying to acclimate to the style, whereas when Brady was involved in the system, it was like clockwork.

“This is taking nothing away from Tom Brady; Tom Brady’s wisdom on the field as a quarterback, it’s not something you can teach, it’s not something you can coach, you get it through the 10,000 hours. And he’s certainly done his share, he’s certainly has a great idea what’s going to happen before the ball is even snapped, and that’s just something that belongs to him and he’s earned that. So I can’t settle the debate, I just think right now, currently, Tom Brady’s applicable wisdom is more valuable than Bill Belichick’s.”

As part of a promotion with the Verizon 5G SuperStadium experience, Cena will represent the Bucs as their super-fan in Tampa Bay’s upcoming showdown with the New York Giants, who will be repped by LL Cool J.

The Verizon 5G SuperStadium experience enables fans to engage in select NFL games from up to seven different camera angles on the field, bringing fans closer to the on-field action. AR overlays will let fans project virtual players and their real time stats during the game. The experience also layers the NFL’s Next Gen Stats proprietary tracking data on-screen with enhanced games stats for players during each play.

The 5G SuperStadium experience within the NFL app is available exclusively, for a limited time, to Verizon customers using the new 5G enabled iPhone 12 models.

John Cena also complimented WWE for being able to pivot and adapt to overcome these unprecedented times during a pandemic. While he noted it’s a different product without fans, and one that he’d find it hard to participate in now if he were still in WWE since he liked to feed off the live audience, Cena said it’s nice to be able to provide fans with an escape and he can’t wait to let what he believes are the “most passionate fanbase in the world” back into events.

Finally, Cena spoke briefly on his role as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad.

“They really want us to keep it under wraps,” he said. “I will tell you what’s out there: What I was told to focus on by James Gunn while portraying Peacemaker was to be a douchey Captain America. So I am really excited, Summer 2021, for everybody to see my little Peacemaker in the Suicide Squad as a douchey Captain America.”
