Patrick Mahomes closes the gap with Russell Wilson for the MVP frontrunner as the NFL season heads towards its second half.

This is the ninth installment of FanSided‘s 17-part series of MVP award analysis.

Each week, the top five players in contention to take home the NFL’s most esteemed individual award are examined.

The series is a running tabulation of statistics, player performance, and of course, impact on team success. In that respect, this analysis should be considered a linear or non-episodic process.

Players currently on the fringe of MVP candidacy include Tom Brady, Ryan Tannehill, Myles Garrett, Aaron Donald, and Ben Roethlisberger. One player exited the Stock Watch, at least for a week, primarily because his team lost, and other players are more worthy of consideration.

To remain on the MVP Stock Watch, players must continue their high-octane success on a weekly basis. If a player plays woefully in a given week, he will probably be jettisoned for awhile until his performance merits re-seeding.

The participants in this week’s Stock Watch changed a bit. A player from a team with a losing record joins the ranking merely because of his herculean statistics.

After Week 8, here are the top five MVP award contenders for 2020.

**Please note: This series will consider sportsbooks odds but will largely weigh individual statistics and impact on the team by the particular player.
