Is the Panthers season over with Christian McCaffrey’s recent news?

One of the more surprising teams this season, the Carolina Panthers have played reasonably well despite losing All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey. Unfortunately, after getting McCaffrey back against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday after missing six games, he could be back on the shelf.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Panthers fear McCaffrey could miss more time after suffering a shoulder injury during the team’s loss at Arrowhead Stadium. The MVP candidate of a year ago made an immediate impact, gaining 151 total yards along with two touchdowns in the 33-31 defeat.

McCaffrey is expected to undergo further evaluations on Monday, but his status against the NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers is uncertain.

How can the Panthers win without Christian McCaffrey?

If McCaffrey is unable to go, Mike Davis likely would return to the role of lead back for Matt Rhule’s squad. In his absence, Davis filled in nicely for McCaffrey, playing an essential part of the team’s passing attack and run game. For the season. Davis has tallied 353 rushing yards, 278 receiving yards and four total touchdowns.

Sitting at 3-6, Carolina is not out of the playoff hunt yet, but its chances are remote. And without a quality do-it-all weapon like McCaffrey in the backfield, games against Tampa Bay, Green Bay and New Orleans will be hard to win.

We’ll see if the Panthers lose their star again, and if they do, it’ll be rough to see many wins moving forward.
