Katie Taylor has an upcoming fight against Miriam Gutierrez, but potential bouts against Amanda Serrano, Cris Cyborg, and others get the hype.

Undisputed lightweight boxing champion Katie Taylor is quickly becoming the primary star in women’s boxing. She’s preparing for battle on Saturday, Nov. 14, but potential megafights capture the public’s attention.

Taylor (16-0, 6 KOs) is coming off a tough competitive August rematch against Delfine Persoon. Taylor won by unanimous decision, but the energetic Persoon didn’t make it easy. Three months later, and Taylor is about to step into the ring again against undefeated Miriam Gutierrez. Three months is a tight window between fights, but Taylor insists she’s fully recovered from the Persoon contest.

“Usually, I heal up quite well,” said Taylor during a press call. “I obviously had a few bruises after the fight, but after a few days, I was fine. I obviously didn’t go back into sparring for a few weeks after the fight. It definitely is a quick turnover, but I felt my body had recovered.”

Gutierrez (13-0, 5 KOs) has a flawless record, but she lacks notable names on her résumé, but Taylor feels like she’ll be a more difficult opponent than some might think.

“I think she is very good,” said Taylor of Gutierrez. “She’s obviously going into this fight unbeaten as well. I know she’s not as well established as someone like Persoon or some of the other girls I’ve fought, but I think she’s actually a lot better than what people think. I’m expecting a very, very tough fight. She can be very tricky at times and very awkward as well.”

Katie Taylor is expected to have no problem with Miriam Gutierrez, but who would be next?

Gutierrez isn’t well known, while Taylor is an established feature fighter. Since her union with Matchroom, Taylor’s career has skyrocketed. She was a dominant amateur who won five world championships and Olympic gold at the 2012 London games for Ireland. It makes sense that Taylor is taking over professional boxing.

Gutierrez is being overlooked by the gigantic future bouts that are ahead of Taylor. Every notable fighter wants a piece of her. Heavy is the crown, as they say. It turns out Taylor is open to all comers.

Taylor was supposed to fight boxer and MMA fighter Amanda Serrano, but their bout was postponed due to the pandemic and later called off under speculative circumstances. Taylor still likes that fight but also has her eye on undisputed welterweight champion Jessica McCaskill.

“I’m afraid to mention Amanda Serrano’s name,” laughed Taylor. “I know that fight has fell through so many times. It’s obviously still a fight people would be interested in. Jessica McCaskill is obviously a huge fight as well. There’s so many girls. Chantelle Cameron has to be mentioned as well. I’m willing up to go up in the weights as well.”

Other boxers such as Chantelle Cameron have taken shots at Taylor in the media. Also, MMA legend Cris Cyborg has discussed taking up boxing and named Taylor as a desirable opponent while talking to Sky Sports in October.

Taylor is interested in a matchup with Cyborg, but it would have to be at a catchweight.

“I’m not too sure what’s next for me, but I would be very, very open to fight Cris Cyborg if that’s the fight people want to see,” said Taylor. “I assume if that fight does happen, she would have to come down, maybe at some sort of a catchweight. I, unfortunately, can’t get up to 170.”

If Taylor fought Cyborg, it would have to be in a boxing ring and not in a cage.

“I can’t imagine myself fighting in a cage,” said Taylor wisely. “I can fight on my feet, alright, but if you get me on the ground, I would be clueless.”

Taylor has a lot of options at her disposal and no shortage of willing opponents. She could be in store for a very interesting 2021, but she has to get past Gutierrez first, and there are no guarantees in boxing.
