The Ohio State-Maryland game is being canceled due to positive COVID-19 test results

The college football world has been rocked with cancelations due to COVID-19. The Big Ten is now facing a major problem as the Ohio State-Maryland game scheduled for Saturday is being canceled due to an outbreak of the virus within the Maryland program.

The school released a statement Wednesday afternoon sharing the news.

“Maryland Football will pause all team-related activities due to an elevated number of COVID-19 cases within the Terrapin’s program. The Ohio State game scheduled for Saturday, November 14 has been canceled and will not be rescheduled. The joint decision to pause football activities and cancel Saturday’s game was made by Director of Athletics Damon Evans and University of Maryland President Darryll Pines, following a recommendation from University health officials, and in consultation with the Big Ten Conference. Over the past seven days, eight football players have tested positive for COVID-19.”

Ohio State-Maryland canceled, rather than rescheduled

This is huge news and will send ripples throughout college football and the College Football Playoff race. The Big Ten is not going to reschedule games and now the Buckeyes will have a maximum regular season of seven games.

There is also obvious concern for the Maryland program and the players who tested positive. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day shared his thoughts:

“Obviously, we are disappointed at not being able to compete this week, but I am incredibly proud of our team and the way they have handled themselves. … We wish Maryland, their student-athletes and programs well as they battle through this issue,” Day said in a statement.

The primary concern is on those who tested positive. From a football standpoint, the Big Ten put itself in a tough spot by trying to play eight games in eight weeks. Wisconsin has still only played one game and now the No. 3 ranked 3-0 Buckeyes will be down a game as well.

This entire college football season has been one big challenge for schools. Cancelations were to be expected and these two teams join the list from this weekend of games that are either off completely or postponed.
