St. Louis Cardinals facing stiff competition to re-sign Yadier Molina
The St. Louis Cardinals are hoping to bring back superstar catcher Yadier Molina, but there are several teams trying to sign him in free agency.
St. Louis Cardinals fans everywhere want to know if catcher Yadier Molina will be returning next season to try and help the NL Central club go on a deep postseason run. At 38 years old, Molina is a free agent, but the team hopes they’ll be able to retain him.
However, there are several clubs out there who are hoping to convince Molina to leave Busch Stadium to play for them instead. The Cardinals remain the favorite, but according to MLB insider Jon Heyman, there are around five-six organizations that have reached out to the future Hall of Famer, including the Mets and Yankees.
Both the New York Yankees and New York Mets are among the teams with interest in signing Yadier Molina
Molina started his career with the Cardinals in 2004, and has been a fan favorite in St. Louis for the past 17 years. Molina has been an All-Star nine times while winning nine Golden Gloves. He’ll go down in history as one of the best players to ever don a Cardinals jersey.
However, there’s a chance he ends up suiting up for a new team come 2021, which will be incredibly difficult for the St. Louis faithful to see. Both the Yankees and Mets giving him a hard look is interesting. We’ll have to wait and see which other teams are working to get Molina to town.
Last season, the 5-foot-11, 225-pounder appeared in 42 games, hitting .262. Molina hit four homers and posted 16 RBI. Despite climbing in age, Molina hasn’t lost any touch with his masterful work behind the plate. Stay tuned to see if he’ll stay home in St. Louis or make a move to a new city.
