Will Muschamp’s firing leaves a great opportunity for the next South Carolina football coach.

After 4.5 seasons at the helm, South Carolina football has parted ways with Will Muschamp.

A 2-5 start to the 2020 college football season was enough for South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner to pull the trigger and commence a head-coaching search. With South Carolina’s fifth loss on the year, it guarantees that the Gamecocks will not have a winning record in consecutive regular seasons. Fortunately, South Carolina can get any number of coaches to lead them in 2021.

7 hires that make sense to replace Will Muschamp at South Carolina

One of the things that have plagued South Carolina football as a program throughout its history is the school’s proclivity to hiring retreads or coaches who understand this will be their last job leading a team. It may serve the Gamecocks to get an up-and-coming head coach a few years before he or anybody else is ready to make the move. I am talking about Charlotte’s Will Healy.

The Charlotte 49ers head coach will be 36-years-old in 2021 and entering his sixth year as a college head coach. He has spent the last two years in Charlotte, going 9-9 overall, as well as the three years before that with the Austin Peay Governors. This would be an opportunity for South Carolina to hire the next Eliah Drinkwitz before he truly becomes the next Eliah Drinkwitz.
