Pat Freiermuth is out for Penn State vs. Iowa and it’s a possibility he’s played his last game for the Nittany Lions.

In a season in which Murphy’s Law has absolutely ravaged James Franklin and Penn State, one of the things Nittany Lion fans could take solace in was the pleasure of watching one of the best tight ends in the country in Pat Freiermuth. Unfortunately for Penn State, with his body started to betray him and an NFL future on the horizon, Freiermuth might’ve played his last down for the Nittany Lions.

Freiermuth, who has 23 catches for 310 yards and one touchdown this season, is not warming up with the Nittany Lions today, all but confirming he is out for their matchup against Iowa. Considering his rising NFL Draft stock, we might’ve seen the last of Freiermuth in a Penn State uniform.

Pat Freiermuth is widely regarded as a top-three tight end in the 2021 NFL Draft

Freiermuth is regarded as one of the top-three players at his position in this class, often compared with Florida’s Kyle Pitts and Miami’s Brevin Jordan, though Pitts has been pulling away this season. The 6-foot-5, 258-pound Freiermuth is a solid receiver, but he is a notch below both Pitts and Jordan in that department.

Where Freiermuth will make his money is as an in-line blocker, as his ability to create holes in the running game and success with securing contested catches has some experts believing he could sneak into the bottom half of the first round.

After a weak class last year, 2021 has the makings of one of the best tight end draft classes in recent memory. WIth Freiermuth’s blend of physicality and athletic ability in the open field pushing him to the top of this class, Penn State might need to brace for the possibility of him declaring early and preparing for the rigors of the NFL.
