Alex Cora wants to talk to Mike Fiers about the past, and that is not going to work out at all.

Boston Red Sox skipper Alex Cora would like a word with relief pitcher Mike Fiers in due time.

Cora said on MassLive’s The Fenway Rundown podcast,  “He did what he did. He felt like he needed to do it. You have to respect that, right? I think with time, we’ll run into each other and we’ll talk about it. We were quote-on-quote teammates in 2017.”

“At one point during our careers, we’re going to run into each other and hopefully, we’ve got time to talk about it. Me listening to him and him listening to me is something that hopefully happens.”

How is this confrontation not going to be so beyond awkward?

Two skippers in the AL lost their jobs because of the sign-stealing scandal of the 2017 Houston Astros. Houston manager A.J. Hinch lost his job after the 2019 MLB season once Fiers blew the whistle on the whole thing. He spent 2020 out of baseball, only to resurface as the next manager of the rebuilding Detroit Tigers. Cora was re-hired in Boston after spending 2020 out of baseball.

Fiers was most recently with the Astros’ AL West rival Oakland Athletics, but is in his free agency. A return to the Bay Area may be in order, but Fiers is almost certainly not going to the Astros, Red Sox or Tigers this offseason. You can count on that. Cora, Hinch and his former Houston teammates are not going to be cool with someone they consider deep down to be a snitch.

As for Cora wanting to have a confrontational conversation with Fiers, he can keep on dreaming. Surely, Fiers will try his best to avoid the incredibly awkward encounter, as we all know Cora will try to force the issue. Either way, there is no win here to bring up an ugly past involving both parties. But if it does happen, it will be on public display for some great cringeworthy content.

Who knows how long the fallout of the 2017 Astros remains a talking point in baseball?
