Florida State – Virginia canceled due to virus issues with Seminoles
Saturday’s Florida State – Virginia game has been canceled due to virus issues with the Seminoles.
One week after the Florida State game with Clemson was postponed due to concerns with the coronavirus on Clemson’s side, tonight’s game between Florida State and Virginia has been canceled due to virus issues on Florida State’s side.
The one constant theme in college football is the postponement, cancelation and rescheduling of games affected by COVID. It’s happening around the country where Ohio State had their game canceled with Illinois and their Big Ten title hopes and playoff fate is in question now.
Alabama head coach and Ohio State coach Nick Saban and Ryan Day, respectively, are both dealing with positive cases that came to light this week.
Florida State coach Mike Norvell tested positive earlier this year.
Florida State athletic director David Coburn said only one player tested positive but due to contact tracing, the Seminoles were left with only 44 scholarship players, far below the ACC minimum requirement to call a game off.
"“Our team underwent the mandated third-party testing yesterday and learned late last night that we had one positive test. Contact tracing this morning determined that, with opt-outs and injuries, we had just 44 scholarship players for the game, with some position groups depleted almost entirely,” Coburn said in a statement.“We deeply regret that many Florida State and Virginia fans have already traveled to the game as well as Virginia’s team. We simply had no way of knowing we would not be playing until this morning. We made every effort to play, but we could not do so in a way that was safe for the players.”"
There is no makeup date announced for the game, but it’s possible the game will not be made up.
