D’Wan Mathis is expected to leave Georgia football after entering the transfer portal.

Georgia is now down to three scholarship quarterbacks with D’Wan Mathis deciding to enter the transfer portal, per 247Sports.

Mathis had been the Georgia Bulldogs’ Week 1 starter vs. the Arkansas Razorbacks. Despite impressing out of fall camp, Mathis struggled in his limited time as the Georgia starter. Stetson Bennett IV took over for him at halftime of the Arkansas game. Weeks later, former USC Trojans signal-caller JT Daniels emerged as the starter, looking great vs. the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Mathis had a chance but Daniels is the present and future at quarterback

With Daniels dominating in his first career Georgia start vs. Mississippi State, it would take an injury or a horrendous performance for him to lose the starting role. Bennett may have lost the gig, but he is not expected to leave the Georgia program for the second time. As for freshman Carson Beck, he has ascended to No. 3 on the depth chart in his first fall semester on campus.

Mathis is a Michigan native, so he may look to go back up north at his second school. He could look to stay in SEC country, but the play he put on tape made it look like he was over his skis when he took the field at Georgia. Overall, there were too many quarterbacks on the Georgia roster fighting for playing time to reasonably believe all will stay. Mathis will be playing elsewhere in 2021.

This is all about Daniels emerging as clearly the best quarterbacking option in Athens.
