After last week’s game was canceled, it’s not looking promising for Ohio State football to play their game vs. Michigan State on Saturday.

It’s not looking promising for Ohio State to play Michigan State on Saturday.

That’s what we already believed after the Buckeyes had to cancel their game vs. Illinois last weekend and head coach Ryan Day tested positive for COVID. It’s been reported that the people impacted by COVID within the football program has topped double-digits and the game vs. Michigan State scheduled for Saturday is in jeopardy.

If the game is not played, Ohio State will not be eligible for the Big Ten Championship Game despite being the best team in the division. However, Dan Patrick has added to the pessimism surrounding whether this game can be played on his show this morning.

Ohio State football game vs. Michigan State is in doubt

“Strong speculation Northwestern versus Minnesota and Ohio State versus Michigan State games get canceled this weekend. That would eliminate Ohio State from the conference championship, so they will be desperate, but a high number of players will be missing.”

That’s not really new information, but it’s confirming the worst fears of Buckeyes fans who can’t afford to have any more games canceled to keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive.

If it’s played, Ohio State’s next opponent is Michigan who just had to pause all team activities after they had positive tests within their program. So even if they play this game there’s no guarantee they play the week after anyway.

But Ohio State doesn’t necessarily need to win the Big Ten to make the playoff. Certainly, it helps. However, it could be a big benefit to not play in it because they could play Wisconsin on Dec. 19 anyway, which would be a better win in the eyes of the committee than a win over Northwestern in all likelihood.
