he Mets are reportedly adding reliever Trevor May as the new additions begin under Steve Cohen.

The New York Mets have a new owner in Steve Cohen and a brand new front office committed to winning. Or at least that is the messaging so far.

It will take action to back up Cohen’s words and it appears the Mets have begun the process of acquiring talent. The team has reportedly added reliever Trevor May, pending a physical.

Mets add a talented reliever in May

May has spent his entire career with the Minnesota Twins and made his debut back in 2014. While he began his career as a starter, he has developed into a reliable reliever.

May’s best season out of the bullpen came in 2019 when he logged 64.1 innings in 65 appearances. He finished with a 2.94 ERA and 79 strikeouts. 2020 saw the reliever get 38 strikeouts in only 23.1 innings to boost his career K/9 to 10.5.

The Mets can use reinforcements in the bullpen and May should provide some stability. The team relied upon Edwin Diaz in 2020 as he finished 19 games and had six saves in the process. His 1.75 ERA and 17.5 K/9 were impressive marks, but he did blow several saves. So his reliability remains in question as he nears the time for a contract extension.

The Mets have the dominant starting pitchers. One top goal this offseason should be focusing on the bullpen. That is arguably more important than focusing all the attention on landing a superstar player if there is plenty of competition from winning teams in those respective chases.

May is a nice start. Now Mets fans will turn their attention back to Cohen putting his money behind his words and adding a superstar.
